Jeremy LaBrooy offers private bass guitar lessons to students in Melbourne’s bayside suburbs, teaching from his home music studio. Jeremy has an extensive musical background and his biography outlines performance in bands, on TV and in theatre productions.

If you are looking to learn bass with Jeremy from Melbourne’s bayside area, here’s what I can teach you:

  • To start playing easy songs to play on the bass in no time.
  • Build a solid and correct technique that will enable you to play the music you want with precision.
  • To develop your ability to read music.
  • To learn different styles of music so you can play them in a band or with friends.
  • To learn advanced bass playing techniques like slapping, muted thumb techniques, double stops, tapping and more.
  • Plus much more good stuff like learning how to get the most out of your practice time, music industry insights and secrets to help you earn an income from music.

As a past VCAA examiner, I have successfully coached students to achieve very high VCE Solo Performance (bass) 3 & 4 scores & gain entry via auditions into The Victorian College of The Arts & Monash University music degrees. Read some of their stories here. Students choosing works for VCE Solo Performance on electric bass can find the full prescribed list on the VCE Electric Bass Prescribed Works page.

What You Will Actually Learn

Here is what bass guitar lessons with me looks like in practice:

  • Playing songs you love. We start with music that motivates you – real songs, not just dry exercises.
  • Solid technique. Right-hand position, left-hand framing, muting, and timing. The foundations that prevent bad habits and unlock more advanced playing later.
  • Reading music. You will learn to read notes on the stave. It is not as difficult as people expect, and it opens doors that playing by ear alone cannot.
  • Band-ready skills. Locking in with a drummer, holding a groove, navigating rock, funk, jazz, and R&B. The skills that make you genuinely useful when a band needs a bassist.
  • Advanced techniques when you are ready. Slapping, muted thumb, tapping, double stops. There is always a next level.
