Bass Guitar Lessons for Keysborough Students

If you are a Keysborough family looking for a specialist bass teacher, there is something you should know before you search any further.

I taught bass guitar at Haileybury’s flagship campus – 855 Springvale Road, Keysborough – from February 2000 to December 2004. I was Senior Bass Guitar Teacher there. I wrote the bass course curriculum from the ground up. And I had two students win the overall school music award in separate years. Not a music category. The school music award, outright, for best achievement in music.

That history is not a footnote. It means I know Keysborough, I know what Keysborough families expect from a music teacher, and I have delivered results at the highest level right there in your suburb.

I returned to Haileybury on contract in 2024. The connection is ongoing.

A Specialist Bass Teacher, 10 Minutes Away

My studio is in Sandhurst, 3977. From Keysborough, that is roughly 10 minutes via the Frankston Freeway. A quick, direct drive – no cross-city traffic, easy to work around school schedules.

If you know Parkmore Shopping Centre or Keysborough Secondary College, you already know the area. My studio is a short run south from there.

I teach bass guitar exclusively. Not guitar, not keyboards, not a general music program. Bass.

That matters. There is no dedicated specialist bass teacher currently serving Keysborough. General music teachers are available in the area. A teacher who has spent over 35 years doing one thing – and one thing only – is a different proposition entirely.

Credentials That Stand Up

Teaching bass since 1990. That is over 35 years on one instrument.

  • Diploma of Teaching (Primary), Monash University
  • Diploma of Arts (Music Improvisation), Victorian College of the Arts
  • VCE Bass Guitar Examiner, October 2002 to October 2006 – I assessed the very exam your student may be preparing for
  • Senior Bass Guitar Teacher, Haileybury Keysborough (855 Springvale Road), February 2000 to December 2004; wrote the bass curriculum; two students won the overall school music award in separate years
  • Returned to Haileybury on contract, July to August 2024
  • Killester College, Springvale, June 2016 to November 2019
  • Working With Children Check current

I have coached students through auditions into bachelor of music programs at the Victorian College of the Arts and Monash University. That is the level of preparation behind every lesson, whether your student is a complete beginner or working toward a VCE result. Students selecting works for their program can refer to the VCE Electric Bass Prescribed Works page for the full list.

For Keysborough Families

Whether your child attends Keysborough Secondary College or another local school, private bass guitar lessons work differently from a school music class.

One student. One teacher. One instrument.

We move at your student’s pace. Technique is built correctly from the start, so poor habits do not compound. We work through music your student actually wants to play – not a fixed syllabus. Theory is woven in where it serves the playing.

My Working With Children Check is current. The studio is a private home studio – safe, quiet, and purpose-built for focused lessons. One student at a time, no distractions.

What We Work On

Beginner to advanced, all ages. Here is what lessons with me cover:

  • Technique – correct hand position, muting, tone, and timing from the ground up
  • Songs you love – because playing music that means something to you is what makes technique stick
  • Reading music – notes on the stave; it opens doors that playing by ear alone cannot
  • Styles – rock, pop, funk, reggae, jazz, hip-hop, and more; I match the lesson to the student
  • Advanced techniques – slap, muted thumb, double stops, tapping, and beyond, when you are ready
