Bass Guitar Lessons Mornington Peninsula
My studio in Sandhurst sits on the northern edge of the Mornington Peninsula. Students from Mornington, Mt Eliza, Langwarrin, Frankston South, and across the wider Peninsula drive here for private bass guitar lessons. The studio is purpose-built, quiet, and focused. One student at a time.
I am Jeremy LaBrooy. I teach bass exclusively. Not guitar, not drums, not keyboards. Just bass.
That specialisation is not common on the Peninsula. Most music tuition down here runs through multi-instrument schools or general music teachers who cover the whole board. A dedicated specialist bass teacher is a different thing entirely – and for a student who is serious about the instrument, it makes a genuine difference.
A Dedicated Specialist Bass Teacher
I have been teaching bass since 1990 – over 35 years. My formal qualifications are a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) from Monash University and a Diploma of Arts (Music Improvisation) from the Victorian College of the Arts.
Jeremy spent years as Senior Bass Guitar Teacher at Haileybury’s Keysborough campus – students from Keysborough are just 15 minutes from his studio. I wrote the bass curriculum there. Two students, in separate years, won the overall school music award for best achievement in music. I returned to Haileybury in 2024 on contract. Jeremy taught at Killester College in Springvale – bass students from Springvale make the short drive south to his studio in Carrum Downs.
From October 2002 to October 2006, I was a VCE Bass Guitar Examiner. I assessed the very exam your student may be preparing for. That perspective is in every lesson.
My Working With Children Check is current.
Peninsula Schools – Private Lessons That Go Further
Students from Peninsula Grammar in Frankston South, Woodleigh School in Langwarrin South, Mount Eliza Secondary College, and Mornington Secondary College are a natural audience for specialist tuition.
School music programs are valuable. Private one-on-one lessons are a different investment.
In a private lesson, we move at your pace. Technique is built correctly from the start – no bad habits compounding over years. We work on music you actually want to play. Theory comes in through the music, not as a separate subject dumped on top.
If your student is working toward VCE Solo Performance, they need a teacher who has been inside that exam process. That is exactly what I bring.
All Ages Welcome
The Peninsula demographic is wide. I teach families with younger children picking up the bass for the first time. I teach teenagers pushing for VCE results or a place in a band. I teach adults – complete beginners and returning players alike – who want to learn properly.
Private lessons move at your pace. No group classes, no waiting for others to catch up.
What You Will Learn
- Technique – correct hand position, muting, finger dexterity, and timing built from the ground up
- Songs you love – real music motivates real progress; that is where we start
- Music reading – notes on the stave open doors that playing by ear alone cannot
- Styles – rock, pop, funk, reggae, jazz, R&B; I match the lesson to the student
- Advanced techniques – slap, muted thumb, tapping, double stops, when you are ready
Zoom Lessons Available
For Peninsula students where the drive to Sandhurst is less practical, Zoom lessons are an option. Some students use Zoom as a bridge between in-studio blocks. Others go fully online and make strong progress. It is a genuine alternative, not a fallback.
